The scraggly-bearded guard I’d threatened at the gate hadn’t been as intimidated as I would’ve hoped. Standing in the rear of a party of five, glaring at me in the long shadow of a tall man in ragged chain mail, a grin crossed his face. It was an expression that said 'ain’t so tough now, are ya?'

“Disarm yourselves and submit to the will of the mayor,” the leader said.

I dropped my shoulders. “Ha! Mayor? Right. Who the hell are you?”

“I’m Guntil, head of the Mayor’s Guard in Brumhill. You, sir, are under arrest.”

“On what charge?”

The man raised his sword. “You threatened a guard.”

My eyes flicked back to Blanch.

“Disarm yourselves and submit to the will of the mayor,” Guntil repeated.

I checked the leader.
